This first session is about activating prior knowledge, which is essential to know what knowledge students have. This activity involves getting the learner's brains working before introducing a topic or theme, as well as motivating them to learn. It means engaging learners in a lesson topic, and helping them access what they already know about the topic, so that they can link that knowledge to the new material. In CLIL, it is important to activate both ideas and language.
First, we write down a title for a series of images related with activating knowledge for learning, does each image represent for ourselves.
Secondly, we have to write as many synonyms and associations for the verb TO ACTIVATE as we can. We have to explain how many different words we can think of that mean something similar to activating.
After that, we observed different case of studies in order to present to our students. I find this activity very interesting to apply in my classes.
Finally, the teacher training explains to us which learning theories are important in activating and CLIL:
- Bilingualism
- Second language acquisition theories
- Cognitive learning theories
- Constructivism
- Social constructivism
